An Ode to the Love Story of Layla & Majnun

مجنوں بھی نہ رسوائے جہاں ہوتا
نہ وہ آپ مکتب میں جو کم آتی پہ لیلیٰ تھی دوانی۔

Na woh āp maktab me jo kam ātī, pe Lailā thī divānī.)

جنگل جنگل شوق کے مارے ناقہ سوار پھرا کی ہے
مجنوں جو صحرائی ہوا تو لیلیٰ بھی سودائی ہوئی۔

(Jangal jangal shauq ke māre nāqa-sawār phirā ki hai
Majnun jo sahrāī huā to Lailā bhi saudāī huī.)

کیا نقش میں مجنوں ہی کے تھی رفتگی عشق
لیلیٰ کی بھی تصویر تو حیران کھڑی ہے۔

(Was it only Majnun’s image that bore the traces of love?
Layla’s portrait too stands in astonishment.)

کہیں شام و سحر رویا تھا مجنوں عشق لیلیٰ میں
ہنوز آشوب دونوں وقت رہتا ہے بیاباں میں۔

(Kahin shām o sahar royā thā Majnun ishq-e-Lailā me
Hanooz āshob dono waqt rahtā hai biyābān me.)

آہستہ قدم رکھیو تو اے ناقۂ لیلیٰ
مجنوں کا بندھا آتا ہے دل گام سے تیرے۔

(Āhistah qadam rakhiyo to ai nāqa-e-Lailā
Majnun kā bandhā ātā hai dil gām se tere)

محبت اب تلک رکھتی ہے یہ تاثیر مجنوں میں
کہ بن لیلیٰ نہیں کھنچتی کہیں تصویر مجنوں میں۔
— سنتوکھ رائے بیتاب
(Mohabbat ab talak rakhtī hai yeh ta’sīr Majnun me
Ke bin Lailā nahin khinchtī kahin tasvīr Majnun me.)

Translation:
Majnun would not have been disgraced in the world
Had Layla not been so madly in love and rarely attended school.

Through forests and deserts, the love-stricken Majnun wandered on his camel,
As he turned wild in the wilderness, Layla too lost herself in madness.

Kya naqsh me Majnun hi ke thī raftagī-e-ishq
Lailā ki bhi tasvīr to hairān khaṛī hai.

Once, Majnun wept morning and evening for Layla’s love,
Even now, the desert remains restless at both times of the day.

Step lightly, O Layla’s camel,
For Majnun’s heart trembles with every step you take.

Even now, love holds this power over Majnun,
That his portrait cannot be drawn without Layla in it.
